St. Basil's Cathedral

The most recognisable building in the whole of Russia, St. Basil's Cathedral (or 'The Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed', to give it it's full title), can be found standing resplendent on the south-east end of Red Square. A truly magnificent mix of Western and Eastern architecture, St. Basil's was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his capture of Kazan. Finished by Postnik Yakovlev in 1561, Ivan is rumoured to have had the architect blinded afterwards, in order to prevent him ever producing anything so magnificent ever again. If only Stalin had done the same!

"Best seen from a distance. A quite martvellous building perfectly placed in the rear of the square. Went inside, the best part was listening to a choire singing. Otherwise not so very interesting."

"Not much to look at from the inside, and often has some scaffolding on the outside. Still absolutely brilliant. I took about forty photos!"
