Luzhniki Stadium

|
Russia's largest sport stadium has seen its fair share of history. Built in 1956, it hosted the Ice Hockey World Championships the following year, was the principal venue of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and in 1982 bore witness to the tragic Luzhniki disaster where scores of fans were killed in a riot (subsequently covered up by the authorities). In 1989 the stadium was the scene of the Moscow Peace Festival in which Scorpions, Metallica and, ahem, Bon Jovi starred. In 2006 Madonna played here and in 2008 Luzhniki will host the Champions League Final. If you're heading out for the big event then you can see the exact location of the stadium on our map. If you're not going to a big event then the best place to see the stadium is at night from the vantage point of Sparrow Hills! |
